This expressive Bokhara suzani of the large medallion type appears as the last catalogue number in the second book on the Vok Suzani Collection – a worthy final piece and highlight. The powerful hexagonal shield medallion with a circular centre of concentric rings has wide design panels emanating from it like the spokes of a large wheel, creating a positively explosive effect like a ball of fire. Taube devotes a highly readable article to large medallion suzanis (pp. 75 - 80) in which he documents the subgroups and conducts a comparative analysis. In his monograph, "The Great Embroideries of Bukhara" – a catalogue of the 54 examples known in the year 2000 – Franses undertakes a division into design groups. The Vok suzani falls into Group A and is listed as A 10. When first published in a HALI article by Pinner and Franses in 1978, it was still in the Voigt Collection, Münster. It was exhibited in Greven in 1979. Vok purchased this LM suzani in our November 1997 sale. – Slight signs of age and wear, several minor restored areas. Very good overall condition. Backed with canvas.
