When a monograph on large-medallion Suzanis, "The Great Embroideries of Bukhara" was published in 2000, author Michael Franses was aware of 54 surviving examples. Large-medallion Suzanis appear imposing on account of their expressive style, strong colours and the monumental impact of their designs. Significant differences exist as regards their composition, ornamentation, palette, dimensions and structure, leading Franses to classify them into various sub-groups. Consigned from a New York collection and belonging to category A, this Suzani was published as example A 19 in Franses’ catalogue. – Backed with canvas, very good condition.
